Twenty Ten Slider theme

A few people contacted me on how to add Nivo Slider to Twenty Ten , so I’ve taken my Twenty Ten options theme and gutted it, leaving only a few features for anyone who just wants the slider in Twenty Ten.

Features include

    – Theme options panel
    - Post thumbnail support
    - Header re-size support via functions.php
    - Featured image slider.

Theme options features

    – Select which category images are pulled from
    - Select transition effect for slider
    - Choose number of images to cycle through
    - Select transition speed
    - Select image pause time
    - Option to turn slider off, or both slider and header off.
    - Select to display default posts or excerpts with post thumbnail.

Other Features

    – Slider will display images from whichever category you tell it to and display them in the header, if there isn’t any, it will display your default header image.
    - Header images are linked to the related post.
    - Instead of the image name being displayed in the slider, the related post title will be displayed.
    - Fully commented theme files in case you want to change anything.

Requirements
You need Twenty Ten theme installed in order to use this.

    • Thanks, yes they are, well Duster theme, same thing I guess. I was so sick of the Twenty Ten menu, I think Twenty Eleven menu looks much nicer, and the comments look better too.

But the slider theme does not look like this site, it's just a Twenty Ten child theme with Nivo slider added, and an options panel.

I'm excited about Twenty Eleven. I've been playing around with it and was worried everything I've learned from Twenty Ten would be wasted. It's not though, everything I've tried with Twenty Eleven works.

  1. Their is somethings i am really liking about Twenty Eleven and their is somethings i hate that i hope they fix up before release. I think the header is way bigger than it needs to be and the showcase template is way bigger than needs to be too. Im really liking 3.2's new dashboard though.

  2. I know what you mean. The header is huge, when I viewed my site using it I could only see the header and menubar. I'm sure they will have an option to adjust the size of it though.

There's just something about it, maybe it's just that it doesn't look like a default theme should?

For example these comments I've added, they contain images, the post comment button is styled, everything is styled. I dunno, I think a default theme should be plain, with the ability to add features and style it easily.

I'd go as far to say Weaver would make a better default theme, just because it's so user friendly, and gives so many choices to the user.

I'll probably end up keeping this theme I'm using now over Twenty Eleven unless they change the look. I've got so many custom functions in it just for this site, I'd hate to loose them all. I took what I liked from Twenty Eleven, and kept what I wanted from Twenty Ten.

    • Have you tried out Bruce's new premium plugin for weaver yet (weaver plus)? Its pretty nice lots of options its still in beta, if you haven't i'm sure he would give you the download link so you can try it out and give him some feed back on it.

  3. I have tried it, looks like a great addition to Weaver theme. Problem is, weaver has advanced so much over the past several months, I haven't had the time to keep up.

Originally Weaver started out as a child theme, with some really nice options. I was really interested in how Twenty Ten and child themes worked, so it caught my attention.

Now it's moved on to become it's own theme, and jam packed with features. This is a good thing, but I'd really have to be using it everyday like I was to be able to give constructive feedback and stay up to date with it.

  4. Way back 2010 when I found a site having a slider on his header. I just had been attracted by the pictures being slide. Then I got an idea to apply it on my personal site which is the site for my favorite Chinese actress. Then I search for it. It took me 2 days to find Nivo Slider. After I installed it, I'm getting so frustrated, I've been trying to work it for days in my blogger site and it isn't working. But after a long trial and error, finally the slider works nicely in my blog. It seems like the most awesome jQuery slider.

  5. It works. click the edit post button, and on the right side see Quitar la imagen destacada, select an image, and set it as featured image, then update the post. is this what you mean?

  6. @Zeaks
that is, there are issues that have no need to do this.
simply load the image and automatically generates the thumbnail.

You are very good person, really, thank you very much for your kind help.
    greetings from Venezuela

  7. HELP!!

Hi, happy to find your image-slider for twentyten also more options for it – I am finally frustrated, cause I am not able to install this two files … sorry – I am not really into those things. So i tried it several times … download file from you side … upload on my server under wordpress plug-ins … nothing happend … I read the installation-file … but this is too much for me – I don’t really get it (as I said I am not into this :o )(. What can I do or better what am I doing wrong …???

    Thanks, Steph

  8. hi Zeaks,

I like your theme options panel, but I have a few questions, have you considered an option to use images rather than a featured category and the option to add more slides if a person only wanted to use images only? I know that the Nivo slider plugin does this, but I want to use something a little more simplistic. Any ideas.

    Thanks again
    Tim

  9. Is there a step by step guide for installing this? I have got as far as installing the theme, installing nivio jquery plug in (the free one, not wordpress, I am unsure if this is the correct one, and cannot view the plug-in in the plug in panel). Made 5 posts and set featured images to all.
Not sure if a header image should be set or have no header image for the slider to work.
Not sure how to set the featured image on each post.
Have tried to search for more info and answers but cannot find any.
    Thanks for any help.

    • Hi MrC, this is a child theme of Twenty EN. The Nivo slider is already installed, you do not need a separate plugin.

Simply install, activate the theme, add some featured images to posts http://codex.wordpress.org/Post_Thumbnails (scroll down to featured image section)

Select the category of posts you want the featured image to be displayed in the slider and change any other settings you need.
